travelled to Henham on Saturday to play their last match of the
2007/8 season against Saffron Walden. In the home fixture Brentwood
were badly beaten 42-12 but currently lie sixth in the league, one
place above their opponents.
The home side kicked off with a strong following breeze on a gloomy
afternoon. Coach Steve Killington was able to pick the previous
week's team apart from Alex Gibson returning to the side at full
back. The opening minutes were evenly balanced, watched by the eager
visiting referee from the Yorkshire Society. However as the first
quarter progressed it was obvious that the visitors' pack was under
pressure from their opponents.
A smart break from Saffron's scrum-half followed by quick passing
down the line saw their left winger over in the corner. A conversion
from the touchline and the home side were deservedly ahead 7-0.
So far the visitor's performance was lacklustre at best and worse
was to come as an intercepted pass from fly-half Dan Whitehead was
quickly converted into a try under the posts. At 0-14 Brentwood
were struggling in all parts of the game.
Into the second quarter and Walden's pack continued to dominate
in scrum and loose and with Brentwood's half-backs struggling the
visitors' game was not comparable with last week's performance against
league winners, Westcliff.
A breath of relief came just before half-time when Whitehead kicked
a penalty. However Saffron Walden forwards broke away from a ruck
and an overlap on the right saw their winger in for their third
try.
The score was awarded despite the consternation of Brentwood's supporters
who were convinced that the move started from an off-side position.
Half-time at 3-19 saw the team lectured at length by the coach and
captain. Brentwood's pack had simply not got into the game and done
the hard staff.
The second half started well for the visitors with the pack driving
into Saffron Walden's half.
A break from the base of the scrum by number eight John Beith saw
scrum-half Rory Pickard off-load to Alex Gibson for the full-back
to score in the right corner. At 8-19 Brentwood were back in the
game. With good phase 1 ball now being readily achieved Beith continued
to lead the attack. Prop Matt Northall replaced Joel Bevans-Royston
as the pack pressurised the Saffron Walden line. A kickable penalty
was ignored as the visitors sought a try. From the line-out the
pack produced a classic driving maul to put hooker Paul Geary over
for a try. Whitehead converted and Brentwood were now just 15-19
down.
With second-row Steve Killington on in place of Rob Jones Brentwood
were now in the driving-seat as Whitehead missed a difficult penalty.
Well into the last quarter Geary broke upfield but a kick ahead
went dead. However, a penalty in front of the posts was converted
by Whitehead to put Brentwood a point behind at 18-19.
The visitors were unable to score again and so were unable to gain
any points from their last match of the season.
Brentwood's season has been so inconsistent, with the main problems
being the lack of experienced players in the small squad and the
failure to produce the required level of performance from week to
week. The team has always played well against the league's better
clubs while failing against the clubs beneath them in the table.
With Harlow and Romford & Gidea Park losing Brentwood could
have finished fourth. However by losing they
have ended up equal sixth with Saffron Walden.
Brentwood: Sherwood, Geary, Bevans, Royston, Woodcock, Jones, Metcalfe,
Beith, De Goni-Parkes, Pickard, Whitehead, Smith, Wylie, Thomas,
Lloyd and Gibson.
In the close season Brentwood third team is on its travels with
a tour to Malta. A squad of 20 players represent the club in a social
tournament to be held before the Malta v Poland international. The
tournament brings together social teams from Malta, Wales and England.
