Club Fixture U15 ( or Rocky 7)

Brentwood 18 Sudbury 17

Coach Ben Norton who refereed this match, should have been awarded the man of the match award for keeping his cool officiating this match for “the hard of hearing the whistle” gang.

Brentwood faced the slope in the first half and were soon under pressure as Sudbury put them on the defence behind the 22 metre line. Brentwood had got off to their customary slow start and gave away a soft try in the first 5 minutes `as a Sudbury player picked up the ball untouched, that had been stripped from Conor’s grasp as he tried to run upfield.

This early set back seemed to wake the Brentwood side up and they began to boss the breakdown but without really making much progress up the field. But then the Brentwood side was disrupted when Connal had to leave the field after a bad ankle injury (undiagnosed at the time of writing).

It was shortly after this that the teams seemed to want to re-enact the Brad Pitt film “Fight Club” as the referee had to deal with a number of scuffles around the pitch and had to speak to speak to both captains, players and coaches about behaviour.

The atmosphere was not helped by the very vocal Sudbury support who clearly thought that their little angels were blameless, and together with the Sudbury player’s sledging, which seems to have been imported from Australian cricket, meant that the niggly play continued throughout the match.

Brentwood turned round at half time 14-0 down but I think both players`and supporters were fairly confident that Brentwood could turn this round.

Round 2
Brentwood put the pressure on Sudbury immediately as fly half Brad kicked sensibly to the corners. From one of the lineouts prop Luke Tilly charged over for an unconverted try. The score was 14-5.
Brentwood kept the pressure up and both Tony and Ryan crossed the line only to be unsuccessful with the touch down.

Sudbury came back into the match at this point and tried to “fight” their way out of their half. Our own Joe Bowtell was even warned by the referee to keep his defence up and not use the ropes too much.
Then the first real highlight of the day occurred when from a kick to the corner, “mystery winger” Nathan managed to beat the defence and touch down for his first try of the season to make the score 14-10.

After several attempts Captain Chris Hughes finally managed to get away from the early tackles and ran in a trademark try to make the score 15-14 to Brentwood with about 5 minutes to go.

But of course the boys wanted to put the supporters through the usual agony by giving away a kickable penalty in their own 22 metres. The Sudbury kicker duly popped the penalty over to a huge cheer from the Sudbury support who clearly thought that the pantomime villain in the shape of the Brentwood U15,s had been put in their place.

So with 2 minutes remaining Sudbury were winning 17-15.

Brentwood kept their head and got the ball down into the Sudbury third of the pitch as quickly as possible. Sudbury in their desire to close out the match kept infringing until Brentwood were awarded a penalty about 30 metres out in a central position.

Step up Brad, who coolly kicked the long range effort between the posts with the last kick of the game. The Sudbury supporters did not cheer. Brentwood had won the match 18-17.

Memorably the Sudbury coach came over to the Brentwood team and supporters after the match to congratulate them on the win and to thank them for such a competitive match. It was a very important gesture and reminded us all about traditional rugby values.

Nathan the winger was awarded man of the match and the team celebrated erstwhile supporter “Grandad’s” and Ollies birthdays in the clubhouse.
